Sad to relate, a motorcyclist was killed in Elmont just before midnight on Wednesday, June 24, 2009. According to the Long Island Press here, he was traveling west when he collided with into a sedan turning left (east to north) onto Plainfield Avenue. This accident was also related in Saturday’s print edition of Newsday. Of the approximately 133 fatalities reported on this blog, 23 have involved left turns.

June 9, 2009 by nassaunySad to report, a bicyclist was killed as he pedaled west on Central Avenue, Bethpage, on the afternoon of Monday, June 8, 2009. The intersection of Central Avenue and Stewart Avenue is controlled by traffic signals. Both streets are wide. The cyclist lost his life when he was hit by a dump truck traveling on Stewart Avenue. Seaman’s Neck Rd and Kingsberry Rd, north Seaford, 5.11.2009

In the process, he struck and killed a motorcyclist riding south. The street is the borderline between the Levittown and Seaford post office designations; hence some confusion about the location. Bethpage Pkwy, 4.15.2009
April 16, 2009 by nassaunyAbout 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 15, 2009, the driver of a car northbound on the Bethpage Parkway, shortly before Hempstead Turnpike, swerved into the southbound lane and collided with a southbound car. The northbound driver lost her life. The newsday.com story is here. Note that this parkway is quite unusual, as it has only two lanes, with a painted line as a divider. A driver unfamiliar with this route might consider it dangerous, but this is the Bethpage Parkway’s first fatality since this blog was begun in early 2007. It was a clear, dry afternoon, and the offending driver was not facing the sun.
