Sunrise Hwy, Bellmore, 4.22.2007

A driver was killed early Sunday morning, April 22, 2007, as she turned left from westbound Sunrise Highway, Bellmore, towards Thomas Place. An eastbound car hit her car, and she unfortunately died as a result of the accident. Thomas Place is a short distance before Bellmore Avenue with its protected left-turn arrow on the traffic signal. By using Thomas Place and westbound-only Royle Street, one avoids waiting for the signal. The Newsday story is here.

Lester Place and O.C.Rd. 3.30.2007

A car going through a red light westbound on Old Country Road about 8 p.m. Friday, 3.30.2007, at Lester Place, killed a pedestrian crossing from the northwest corner (Dunkin Donuts corner?) to the south side. A Sikh temple (a Gurdwara) is there at 1065 Old Country Road. The police are looking for the hit-run driver. The Newsday article is titled Police seek driver in Plainview hi-and-run.

April 5, 2007:
Arrested in the hit-and-run case was Joseph Kohler, 76, who has a history dating back to 1986 for arrests and convictions in Suffolk and Nassau counties for driving while impaired and leaving the scene of an accident, said Det. Lt. Dennis Barry of Nassau’s Homicide Squad. Source: Newsday.

On February 19 or 20, 2009, a jury convicted Kohler of two of the three counts he faced: reckless driving and leaving the scene of an accident.  The jury was unable to reach a verdict on the charge of criminally neglegent homicide.  Sentencing is scheduled for March 19.  See a newsday.com article here.
