Northern State Pkwy 5.20.07

May 22, 2007

A charter coach bus belonging to Atlantic Express flipped over on the Northern State Parkway, westbound, near Willis Avenue late Sunday, May 20, 2007. Buses of that size are forbidden to use the parkway. This was not a case of a high vehicle hitting an overpass. The bus apparently first swerved to the shoulder, then crossed left to the concrete center barrier, then flipped on the driver’s side. He was crushed to death. Among the puzzling aspects of this crash is that the driver had finished his charter by dropping the Girl Scout passengers in Flatbush. He was supposed to return directly to the bus yard on Staten Island, but hours later was reported to the police by parkway motorists as being an unauthorized vehicle. Newsday carried several stories, including this link.

Because the driver pleaded guilty to second-degree manslauter, the judge sentenced him December 1, 2008, to two-to-six years in jail.  The newsday.com article here states that the judge allowed the guilty plea because of the difficulty of convicting for first-degree manslauter.
