About 10:15 a.m., November 14, 2007, a three-pound rock fell off the rear of a truck in Old Brookville. It bounced through the windshield a car traveling in the opposite direction and killed a passenger in the front seat. Reviewing some contradictory narratives in the press, it seems that the accident occurred on Cedar Swamp Road (NY 107) between Chicken Valley Road and Glen Head Road, a distance of perhaps 1 km. One newsday.com story is here. The New York Times brief report by Bruce Lambert seems more accurate as to location, but the two newspapers (Newsday and the Times) present the vehicles’ directions differently, although it is agreed that they were traveling in opposite directions. As of November 15, the truck had not been found.

November 11, 2007A bicyclist traveling north on South Franklin St, Hempstead, about 1:15 p.m. on Saturday, November 10, 2007, was killed in a collision with a bus. According to Newsday.com here, he was riding near the right rear of the bus. There is no mention of a turning vehicle. November 7, 2007Jason Jimenez of East Meadow lost his life about 3:30 a.m. on Tuesday, November 4, 2007, traveling northbound on Ocean Avenue, Malverne, just before it merges into northbound Hempstead Avenue. Ocean Avenue is a wide street, with few cross streets and a park on the right. Somewhere near the crash site is a diagonal railroad crossing. The driver veered off the avenue (perhaps to the right), hitting a utility pole and then a traffic signal pole, according to Newsday here. Sad. Two hours later, there was heavy rain; I don’t know the weather at the time of the crash.
