On a clear Saturday, midday, January 31, 2009, a driver unfortunately lost his life northbound on the Wantagh Parkway between Sunrise Highway and the Southern State Parkway. Few details are available, but it seems to have involved loss of control, hitting a tree, a flip-over, and the ejection of the driver. Newsday has five photos of the result. The front of the 2003 red Corvette was demolished. See newsday.com here. The tree he hit is on the left, about a half-mile north of the Park Avenue bridge. The crash made quite a mark on this tree , perhaps 18 inches in diameter. The impact sent the car back into the center lane in pieces.

January 31, 2009Southern State Pkwy, exit 17, 1.30.2009
January 30, 2009On the Southern State Parkway about 12:30 a.m. Friday, January 30, 2009, an unfortunate speeder traveling westbound between exits 18 and 17 went off the road to the right, then swerved across all lanes. He crashed into the divider and, sadly, lost his life. The brief story on newsday.com is here. Empirestatenews.net supplied the direction of the car. Neither account indicates whether this happened east or west of the bridge over the LIRR West Hempstead branch. Westbound traffic goes under Woodfield Road, then climbs a hill cresting over the LIRR, then has a leftward curve before reaching exit 17.
