Hempstead Tpk, East Meadow

July 29, 2009

The intersection of Newbridge Road and Hempstead Turnpike is wide and busy.  Unfortunately, before 10 p.m. on July 28, 2009, a pedestrian lost her life when crossing Hempstead Turnpike.  The news story does not include whether she was using the west crosswalk or the east crosswalk, nor which direction she was walking.  A driver going east hit and killed her, according to the newsday.com article here.

Pedestrians have particular problems there with turning vehicles, but that appears not to have been the case with this death.

Park Avenue, Long Beach

July 28, 2009

Lamentably, on the morning of July 28, 2009, a truck westbound on East Park Avenue (somewhere near Neptune Blvd), struck several parked cars and killed a pedestrian on the sidewalk, a man who was leaving a store.   The newsday.com link is here.

North Broadway, Jericho, 7.20.2009

July 21, 2009

Upon exiting the Northern State Parkway (from eastbound parkway or from westbound parkway), a man on a motorcycle hit a curb along North Broadway, Jericho.  The time was about 11:30 p.m. on Monday, July 20, 2009.  Unfortunately, the rider fell into northbound traffic on North Broadway and was struck and killed.  Please see the newsday.com article here.

Wantagh Parkway, 7.20.2009

July 21, 2009

About 8 p.m. on Monday, July 20, 2009, before sundown, a bicyclist alongside the Wantagh Parkway stopped to repair a flat tire.  The location was reported as just north of  the Goose Creek Bridge, one of three bridges on the parkway north of Jones Beach.  The bicycle path runs alongside the northbound three lanes of traffic, but most of the time four or more yards away from the lanes.  At the bridges, however, the path is closer to the traffic.

Unfortunately, a northbound motorcyclist lost control of his cycle, left the parkway, crashed into the bicyclist and killed him.  The newsday.com story is here.  Police charged the motorcyclist as driving while intoxicated and other charges.

The location of the crash may be different from what was stated in the news reports.  I have been watching for a memorial, and today (July 24, 2009), I found it not at the Goose Creek bridge, but further north, just before reaching the bridge over Seaman’s Creek.  The guard rail and cyclone fence appear damaged from a crash, and hanging on the fence are a bicycle wheel and other mementos.   This is about 3.5 miles north of the Jones Beach water tower.
