Fulton St., Farmingdale, 11.15.2009

November 16, 2009

Tragic to report, a 14-year-old lad lost his life while on his bicycle and crossing Fulton Street, Farmingdale, near Staples St.  This intersection of north-south Staples Street with NY State Highway 109 (Fulton Street) is controlled by a traffic signal.  A car hit the cyclist about 5:40 p.m., an hour after sundown.  The articles about the accident are not clear about the direction the car was traveling.  The driver immediately stopped.  See the report in the Long Island Press here.

Wantagh Parkway, 7.20.2009

July 21, 2009

About 8 p.m. on Monday, July 20, 2009, before sundown, a bicyclist alongside the Wantagh Parkway stopped to repair a flat tire.  The location was reported as just north of  the Goose Creek Bridge, one of three bridges on the parkway north of Jones Beach.  The bicycle path runs alongside the northbound three lanes of traffic, but most of the time four or more yards away from the lanes.  At the bridges, however, the path is closer to the traffic.

Unfortunately, a northbound motorcyclist lost control of his cycle, left the parkway, crashed into the bicyclist and killed him.  The newsday.com story is here.  Police charged the motorcyclist as driving while intoxicated and other charges.

The location of the crash may be different from what was stated in the news reports.  I have been watching for a memorial, and today (July 24, 2009), I found it not at the Goose Creek bridge, but further north, just before reaching the bridge over Seaman’s Creek.  The guard rail and cyclone fence appear damaged from a crash, and hanging on the fence are a bicycle wheel and other mementos.   This is about 3.5 miles north of the Jones Beach water tower.

June 9, 2009

Sad to report, a bicyclist was killed as he pedaled west on Central Avenue, Bethpage, on the afternoon of Monday, June 8, 2009.  The intersection of Central Avenue and Stewart Avenue is controlled by traffic signals.  Both streets are wide.  The cyclist lost his life when he was hit by a dump truck traveling on Stewart Avenue.  The Newsday.com story is here.

About 2:15 p.m. Saturday, November 15, 2008, an eastbound car struck a 13-year-old bicyclist on Hempstead Turnpike, Bethpage, near Seitz Drive.  Unfortunately, he died in a hospital two days later.  The newsday.com story is here.   A short block east, there is a push-button walk signal that lengthens to 35 seconds the time allowed to cross the turnpike.  At Seitz Drive, there is no traffic signal.

Sunrise Hwy, Seaford, 9.21.08

September 22, 2008

According to newsday.com here, a bicyclist was struck and killed by a car on eastbound Sunrise Highway west of the NY 135 overpass.   Apprently he had moved from the right-hand lane to the left-most of the three eastbound lanes before being struck.  Four remains of yellow tape to the right and left of the westbound lanes, that is along the right shoulder and the metal median divider, seems to mark the general location of the collision.  A sad loss.

Stewart Ave., Bethpage, 9.18.08

September 22, 2008

About 4:34 p.m. on Thursday, September 18, 2008, a cyclist on Stewart Avenue rode in front of a westbound train in Bethpage.  Sad to say, the cyclist lost his life.  The newsday.com story is here.

Sad to relate, a school bus struck a bicyclist in Long Beach on Monday, July 28, 2008, presumably during daylight.  The bus was traveling west on East Olive Street, which is one-way westbound.  The cyclist was traveling north on Monroe Blvd. There may be three stop signs at this intersection.  The cyclist died a few days later from his injuries.  The newsday.com story is here.

Bennett Ave., Hempstead, 7.20.2008

July 21, 2008

Police charged the driver of an automobile with second-degree murder among other charges, because he struck and killed a rival who was riding a bicycle.  This happened on Bennett Avenue, Hempstead, in the first hour of Sunday morning, July 20, 2008.  One of several newsday.com articles is here. It is not clear to me who actually charges the accused: Hempstead police, Nassau police, or the District Attorney’s office.

Hempstead, 11.10.2007

November 11, 2007

A bicyclist traveling north on South Franklin St, Hempstead, about 1:15 p.m. on Saturday, November 10, 2007, was killed in a collision with a bus. According to Newsday.com here, he was riding near the right rear of the bus. There is no mention of a turning vehicle. The location was at or near the intersection with Peninsula Blvd. Because Peninsula Blvd is wide and crosses South Franklin St on a diagonal, the distance traveled by a vehicle crossing Peninsula Blvd northbound is considerable.

Hicksville, 10.12.2007

October 13, 2007

On Friday afternoon, October 12, 2007, a bus (Route N79, LI Bus or MSBA, an alternate name), traveling south on Newbridge Road, Hicksville, made a right turn onto Old Country Road. A cyclist collided with the bus and was killed. This seems to be the first fatal accident involving LI Bus in Nassau County in 2007. A brief newsday.com report is here.
