Hempstead Tpk., East Meadow, 8.23.2009

Tragically, two brothers were killed about 4 a.m. Sunday, August 23, 2009, as they crossed Hempstead Turnpike near Conti Square Blvd., East Meadow.  A westbound driver (according to police, drunk) killed both brothers.  The newsday.com story is here.

The intersection of Newbridge Road and Hempstead Turnpike is wide and busy.  Unfortunately, before 10 p.m. on July 28, 2009, a pedestrian lost her life when crossing Hempstead Turnpike.  The news story does not include whether she was using the west crosswalk or the east crosswalk, nor which direction she was walking.  A driver going east hit and killed her, according to the newsday.com article here.

Pedestrians have particular problems there with turning vehicles, but that appears not to have been the case with this death.

Sad to relate, a motorcyclist was killed in Elmont just before midnight on Wednesday, June 24, 2009.  According to the Long Island Press here, he was traveling west when he collided with into a sedan turning left (east to north) onto Plainfield Avenue.  This accident was also related in Saturday’s print edition of Newsday.  Of the approximately 133 fatalities reported on this blog, 23 have involved left turns.

Sad to relate, a young lady was struck by an eastbound car when crossing Hempstead Turnpike northbound near Loring Road, Levittown, shortly before 11 p.m., Tuesday, December 30, 2008.  She passed away on New Year’s Day.  The newsday.com report of her death is here.  The year 2008 brought five deaths on Hempstead Turnpike.

About 2:15 p.m. Saturday, November 15, 2008, an eastbound car struck a 13-year-old bicyclist on Hempstead Turnpike, Bethpage, near Seitz Drive.  Unfortunately, he died in a hospital two days later.  The newsday.com story is here.   A short block east, there is a push-button walk signal that lengthens to 35 seconds the time allowed to cross the turnpike.  At Seitz Drive, there is no traffic signal.

Sad to tell, a motorcyclist lost his life in Elmont when, traveling east, he crashed into a parked car, a planter, and a street sign.  The link to newsday.com is here.  The time was about 9:30 on Sunday night, September 7, 2008.  Newsday did not identify the nearest intersection or give an address.

An unlicensed driver, age 17, was driving east on Fulton Avenue (NY 24), Hempstead, when he attempted a left turn onto Robson Place about 8:37 p.m.  His mother was in the passenger seat.  Unfortunately, he cut off a motorcycle, which crashed into the car and killed his mother.  What grief!  Both people on the motorcycle were injured.  The newsday.com article is here.

A taxi driver on Hempstead Turnpike about 11:30 p.m. Tuesday night, May 6, 2008, struck a pedestrian attempting to cross the turnpike near Plainfield Avenue, Elmont. The pedestrian later died at the hospital. See Newsday here.

About 2:30 a.m. on early Sunday morning, a westbound driver on Hempstead Turnpike, Levittown, collided with a vehicle turning left from southbound Wantagh Avenue onto eastbound Hempstead Turnpike. Of the four people in the southbound car, one was killed. The police charged the driver of the westbound car with driving while intoxicated and with vehicular manslaughter. The newsday.com article is here. Over the years, this intersection has been listed as one of Long Island’s most dangerous for collisions, but this is the first fatality here in 2007.
