September 17, 2009

Newsday reports that a body was found on the roadway that crosses through the park from Hempstead Turnpike to Merrick Avenue.  The discovery was made about 9:15 by a northbound motorist.  It may be a hit-and-run.   The newsday.com story is here.

Jerusalem Ave., Uniondale, 8.16, 2009

Sad to report, a pedestrian crossing Jerusalem Avenue just before noon on Sunday, August 16, 2009, near Bedford Avenue, Uniondale, was struck and killed by a car.  The newsday.com story here gives the precise location and narrates how the police caught the hit-run driver.

Doughty Blvd, Inwood, 11.21.2008

What heartbreak!  Near the Inwood Post Office about 5 p.m. on Friday, November 21, 2008, a woman and her six-year-old son were using one of the crosswalks at the intersection of Doughty Blvd. and Morris Avenue.  A car turned left off Doughty Blvd onto Morris Avenue, hitting both persons, killing the mother.  Apparently, as Morris Avenue goes only west from Doughty Blvd., the vehicle was turning from north to west.  The driver kept going and was not captured.  The account is at newsday.com here.

Southern State Pkwy, exit 22, 6.18.08

About 2:45 a.m., Wednesday, June 18, 2008, two motorcyclists traveling west on the Southern State Parkway collided.  This happened somewhere west of the Meadowbrook Parkway interchange.  Both were ejected from their motorcycles.  Sadly, one cyclist died.  The other fled, but was captured.  The newsday.com article is here.

Merrick Rd, Rockville Centre, 3.11.2008

A driver heading east on Merrick Road struck and killed a pedestrian at Village Avenue. The driver fled, his damaged car was found, and he turned himself in. The charges against him may be found in the article here.

North Main St, Freeport, 1.8.2008

The first Nassau County loss of the New Year is Salomon Fernandez, a pedestrian struck and killed about 4:30 a.m. on North Main Street, north of Davis Street, Freeport. The driver that killed him kept going and fled. The newsday.com article is here.

Covert Ave., 12.23.2007

Shortly after sundown on Sunday, December 23, 2007, Lucrecia (or Lucretia) Jara was struck as she crossed Covert Avenue at Third Avenue, New Hyde Park. According to 1010wins.com here, she was crossing westbound when a southbound black sedan struck her and kept going. Third Avenue here is parallel to the railroad tracks, along the south side of the tracks. As it is an intersection, state law requires drivers to yield to pedestrians crossing the street. Mineola Ave, Roslyn Heights 7.6.2007

Mineola Avenue, Roslyn Heights, is a north-south business street, with a traffic signal at Elm Street. Sad to relate, on Friday night, July 6, 2007, about 8:10 p.m., Jeffrey Siegel, M.D., was crossing the street there or near Willow Street when he was fatally struck by a car. 1010wins.com reports that the the driver continued north. Newsday.com reported here on September 25, 2008, that the judge rejected a plea deal offered by the accused’s lawyer, namely accepting a jail term of two-to-six years. On November 7, 2008, a jury found the driver guilty of criminally negligent homicide and leaving the scene of an accident.  The newsday.com story is here. On December 23, 2008, Newsday reported that the judge sentenced the driver to 3 to 6 years in prison.

What sadness! A woman, mother of three, was struck and killed about 10:45 p.m. on Stuyvesant Avenue, East Meadow, near her home. The Newsday.com article is here. Stuyvesant Avenue runs northeast from East Meadow Avenue and is about eight blocks long.

From 1010wins 5.13.7: A 57-year-old man is under arrest in the fatal hit-and-run accident of a woman who was standing at the end of her driveway waiting for her husband. Nassau police say Robert Fowler of N. Hickey Street in Massapequa is charged with leaving the scene of an accident involving a fatality.
