Hempstead Tpk, Elmont, 6.24.2009

Sad to relate, a motorcyclist was killed in Elmont just before midnight on Wednesday, June 24, 2009.  According to the Long Island Press here, he was traveling west when he collided with into a sedan turning left (east to north) onto Plainfield Avenue.  This accident was also related in Saturday’s print edition of Newsday.  Of the approximately 133 fatalities reported on this blog, 23 have involved left turns.

Grand Avenue, Baldwin, 5.12.2009

A motorcyclist traveling north on Grand Avenue, Baldwin, was killed at the intersection of Village Avenue.  A southbound car, making a left turn, struck the motorcycle.  The newsday.com story is here.

NY 106, Muttontown, 5.2.2009

About 8 p.m., Saturday, May 2, 2009, a man was driving north on NY 106 in Muttontown and attempted to turn left onto Brookville Road.  A southbound car struck his car.  His wife, seated next to him, sadly lost her life.  The newsday.com story is here.  The follow-up article in print 5.5.2009 refers to a left-turn green arrow as part of the signal cycle.

Atlantic Ave., East Rockaway, 3.6.2008

A male driver was killed while turning left into a driveway at his apartment complex in the early morning hours of Friday, March 6, 2008, according to this story in newsday.com.   He was driving south, the car striking his going north.  Note that this Atlantic Avenue begins in Lynbrook and goes south to East Rockway.  Apparently the crash happened near a bend near Woods Avenue.  Later, in East Rockaway Atlantic Avenue changes route, turning east to Long Beach road, Oceanside.

Doughty Blvd, Inwood, 11.21.2008

What heartbreak!  Near the Inwood Post Office about 5 p.m. on Friday, November 21, 2008, a woman and her six-year-old son were using one of the crosswalks at the intersection of Doughty Blvd. and Morris Avenue.  A car turned left off Doughty Blvd onto Morris Avenue, hitting both persons, killing the mother.  Apparently, as Morris Avenue goes only west from Doughty Blvd., the vehicle was turning from north to west.  The driver kept going and was not captured.  The account is at newsday.com here.

Sheridan Blvd, Inwood, 9.21.08

Sad to relate, a motorcyclist died about noon on Sunday, September 21, 2008, the result of a collision with an automobile at the intersection of Grand Central Place and Sheridan Blvd., Inwood, in the Town of Hempstead.  The newsday.com article is here.  Grand Central Place is one-way westbound.  According to the article the car struck by the motorcycle was making a left turn onto southbound Sheridan Blvd.

Merrick Ave., East Meadow, 8.26.2008

A little before ten o’clock on Tuesday evening, August 26, 2008, three men were in a car traveling south on Merrick Avenue.  Somehow they collided with a car that apparently exited eastbound from Luddington Road.  According to Channel 7- WABC, that car was making a left turn to northbound Merrick Avenue.  The southbound car hit the second car at the driver’s door (according to newsday.com photos), killing the driver.  The occupants of the southbound car were taken to the hospital.  No charges were filed, according to the newsday.com article here.  Luddington Road ends at Merrick Avenue.

Fulton Ave., Hempstead, 7.17.2008

An unlicensed driver, age 17, was driving east on Fulton Avenue (NY 24), Hempstead, when he attempted a left turn onto Robson Place about 8:37 p.m.  His mother was in the passenger seat.  Unfortunately, he cut off a motorcycle, which crashed into the car and killed his mother.  What grief!  Both people on the motorcycle were injured.  The newsday.com article is here.

Nassau Road, Roosevelt, 4.13.2008

Another motorcyclist has died, struck by a sedan driver making a left turn. Later, that driver was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated. The cyclist was riding north on Nassau Road about four o’clock Sunday morning, April 13, 2008. The sedan driver came south on Nassau Road. She killed the cyclist when she turned left towards Lakewood Avenue. Sad. This is the tenth motorcyclist killed in Nassau County in fourteen months.

E. Merrick Rd, Valley Stream, 3.1.2008

An hour after sunrise on Saturday, March 1, 2008, a pedestrian was killed as she crossed East Merrick Road near Rockaway Parkway in Valley Stream. The driver of the pick-up truck was heading south on Rockaway Parkway and made a left turn onto East Merrick Road when he hit the pedestrian. New York state law requires turning vehicles to yield to pedestrians at intersections. This intersection has crosswalks and a traffic signal. The driver was not charged. The newsday.com story is here.
