An eastbound motorcyclist killed himself on the Southern State Parkway about 3:30 a.m., Monday, August 18, 2009. When I happened to pass the scene about 6:30, the police were taking measurements just east of the Corona Avenue bridge, exit 15. The cyclist had four lanes to choose, but he crashed into the rear of an automobile. The reporter for Newsday has given a fuller description here.

Southern State Pkwy, exit 17, 1.30.2009
January 30, 2009On the Southern State Parkway about 12:30 a.m. Friday, January 30, 2009, an unfortunate speeder traveling westbound between exits 18 and 17 went off the road to the right, then swerved across all lanes. He crashed into the divider and, sadly, lost his life. The brief story on newsday.com is here. Empirestatenews.net supplied the direction of the car. Neither account indicates whether this happened east or west of the bridge over the LIRR West Hempstead branch. Westbound traffic goes under Woodfield Road, then climbs a hill cresting over the LIRR, then has a leftward curve before reaching exit 17.

November 3, 2008Regrettably, a motorcyclist lost his life when he was riding eastbound on the Southern State Parkway near Peninsula Blvd. about 9 a.m. Sunday, November 2, 2008. September 25, 2008This afternoon we came upon the ashes of two lines of police flares westbound at Exit 16 of the Southern State Parkway. Newsday.com here reports that before 3 a.m. near Exit 14, North Valley Stream, a car had zig-zagged, hit the center divider, flipped, and caught fire. One person was rescued by a brave man, one sadly perished in the automobile.

June 18, 2008About 2:45 a.m., Wednesday, June 18, 2008, two motorcyclists traveling west on the Southern State Parkway collided. This happened somewhere west of the Meadowbrook Parkway interchange. May 20, 2008Somehow a fatal crash late Sunday night, August 19, 2007, escaped my notice. However, the conviction of the driver on May 19, 2008, brought the accident to my attention. The accusation included a statement that the driver was high on marijuana. The jury convicted the driver of manslaugter, with Judge John Kase presiding. The person who died was in the back seat; three others were injured. The car was traveling eastbound on the Southern State Parkway near Exit 17, Malverne, skidded, and crashed into a tree. November 5, 2007Tragic, this is another incident of a man returning eastbound from work before 6 a.m., Sunday, November 4, 2007. Somehow, he drifted to the right on the slight curve under Nassau Road, Roosevelt, and was killed between the guard rail and the overpass. Newsday’s account is here.
