Sunrise Hwy,Seaford 11.1.2009

Tragically, a minor accident led to death on Sunrise Highway, Seaford, during the first hour of November 1, 2009.  According to newsday.com here, a westbound driver rear-ended another car west of Washington Avenue.  Both stopped.  One driver crossed to the median of Sunrise Highway on foot.  Crossing back to the cars, he was killed by another westbound car.

About 3:30 on Sunday morning, October 26, 2008, a man driving west on Sunrise Highway, Freeport, crashed into a curbside utility pole and a tree before reaching Brookside Avenue.  Sadly, he died.  The newsday.com story is here.

More than an hour before dawn on Thursday, October 16, 2008, a driver sadly lost her life on Sunrise Highway westbound at Merrick Avenue.  A gasoline tank truck was stopped at a red light, and she crashed into it.  The newsday.com story is here.

According to newsday.com here, a bicyclist was struck and killed by a car on eastbound Sunrise Highway west of the NY 135 overpass.   Apprently he had moved from the right-hand lane to the left-most of the three eastbound lanes before being struck.  Four remains of yellow tape to the right and left of the westbound lanes, that is along the right shoulder and the metal median divider, seems to mark the general location of the collision.  A sad loss.

Sad to relate, a woman lost her life about 3:30 a.m. eastbound on Sunrise Highway, Massapequa, where the highway curves northeast under the Long Island Rail Road. Going straight east is Old Sunrise Highway. Somehow, driving alone, she hit a hefty traffic signal stanchion with such force that the car was torn apart and she lost her life. A Seaford resident, Robert Grogan, lost his life as he walked across Sunrise Highway at Washington Avenue, Seaford, about 8:45 p.m., Friday night, September 7, 2007. Newsday.com does not indicate his direction nor that of the vehicle. The west crosswalk at Washington Avenues offers a pedestrian button which lengthens the time of the red light against Sunrise Highway traffic. See the article in Newsday.com here.

A driver was killed early Sunday morning, April 22, 2007, as she turned left from westbound Sunrise Highway, Bellmore, towards Thomas Place. An eastbound car hit her car, and she unfortunately died as a result of the accident. Thomas Place is a short distance before Bellmore Avenue with its protected left-turn arrow on the traffic signal. By using Thomas Place and westbound-only Royle Street, one avoids waiting for the signal. The Newsday story is here.

On Sunrise Highway, Baldwin, Feb. 14, 2007, about 7 p.m., the driver of a westbound car attempted a left turn onto Central Avenue, an intersection that has a left turn lane and a ordinary traffic signal that lacks a left-turn arrow. The passenger in that Malibu was killed when an eastbound SUV hit it. Link to Newsday article here.
