I will leave this blog up for a while, then remove it. It may have already served its purpose by giving several years’ sampling of the fatal accidents in Nassau County, New York. However, it appears that a third of the fatalities go unreported in the media. Also, in this era follow-up reports are weak. Fresher news on different topics replaces a useful follow-up, so the story remains incomplete. The loss of life in accidents is tragic for all of us, and each is a beloved.

A man on a motorcycle sadly lost his life by crashing into a tree along Midwood Avenue, Farmingdale, on Monday evening, October 18, 2010. The newsday.com report is here.

On 9.10.2010, Newsday reported that fatality statistics were released by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The list states there were 96 traffic fatalities in Nassau County in 2008 and 88 in 2009. The 2008 figure shows that this blog is missing many: the NHTSA 2008 count is 96; I reported 59 in news sources.

Tragically, a girl aged 14 lost her life crossing Sunrise Highway in Wantagh about 6:20 a.m. on Wednesday, September 22, 2010. The newsday.com story linked here has a misleading second sentence. It reads as if she walked two miles to school and then crossed the highway. Rather, she was struck by a car only a few blocks from home. She was struck near the northwest corner of the intersection of Wantagh Avenue and Sunrise Highway. At this crosswalk, pushing the walk button gives a pedestrian about forty seconds to cross the street before Sunrise Highway traffic gets the next green signal. Without the push of the button, Sunrise Highway traffic is halted for about eighteen seconds. Wcbs.com showed a video from the Lukoil gas station showing Sunrise traffic moving at highway speed.

NY 107, Old Brookville, 9.14.2010

Cedar Swamp Road, NY 107, has two lanes, separated by a yellow line, as it winds north of Jericho. Almost at noon, Tuesday, September 14, 2010, a northbound driver crossed the yellow line and collided with a southbound car. Sad to say, the other driver died. The offending driver was charged with several counts. The newsday.com story, linked here, does not indicate where along Cedar Swamp Road the collision occurred.

Long Island Expwy, Plainview, 9.6.2010

A drunk driver caused the death of his passenger early Monday morning of Labor Day, September 6, 2010, by driving the wrong way on the Long Island Expressway. West of Sunnyside Blvd., Plainview, he crashed into a divider, which ripped off the right side of the car. Both Newsday and the Long Island Press covered this crash. Sad to relate, but a pedestrian was killed crossing Uniondale Avenue near Coleridge Road about 2 a.m. Monday, August 30, 2010. The southbound driver was charged with DWI. The longislandpress.com article is linked here.

Old Country Rd., Westbury, 8.18.2010

Sad to relate, but a pedestrian crossing Old Country Road southwards at Carleton St. on the evening of Wednesday, August 18, 2010, was struck and killed by an eastbound car. A newsday.com update is linked here. There is no traffic signal at Carleton St. and Old Country Road.

Sad to relate, but during the first hour of Saturday, August 7, 2010, a motorcyclist carrying a passenger was struck from behind on the south service road of I-495 near Exit 40. The passenger lived, but the driver died. A longislandpress.com article is here.
